Community Project
Project Description: “What is a community?” San Diego is a city of neighborhoods, each with their own distinct qualities. This project we intend to travel throughout the many neighborhoods of San Diego observing the cultural differences and their aesthetics. We will be paying attention to sights, sounds, tastes, and aesthetics of these neighborhoods. With these explorations of San Diego, we will develop a “Mood Truck” in partners that addresses the social differences.
In my own words, this project is us going around our picked neighborhood and adding what we think it needs in the form of a "Food Truck". We are going to make a mock up of what we want our food truck to look like. The winner gets to actually make that mock up come true and use an actual food truck.
One weekend I went to Hillcrest (my neighborhood) and looked at prices of things/the community as a whole. What I got out of it was that its a very friendly neighborhood with a lot of food places + shops. When I looked at prices, I noticed dessert places were very pricey there. One of my ideas is to make a cheaper dessert truck to sell down in Hillcrest. I think this would be good because it is obviously a foody neighborhood with a lot of people in it.
Reflection:
I really enjoyed this project because it was a fun way to get out and see our neighborhoods. It was cool to see all of the pros and cons of our neighborhoods as well. Something that I really liked was being able to help a common problem. Since mine was homelessness, it felt really good to come up with an idea that someone can use in the future to help diminish that problem.
What goes on in my neighborhood?
Since Hillcrest is a hip, young neighborhood, there's a lot going on all the time. It is a busy neighborhood with restaurants, shops, and clubs. This neighborhood attracts a younger crowd, especially on the weekends. Many people come for the food, while others come to be exposed to a different environment. Since the neighborhood is an LGBT community, a big attraction is the parade held every year. Some other fun things are farmers markets, picnics, and gatherings.
