This semester, we focused on food insecurity in the U.S. While partnering up with food equity groups, we were able to have a panel discussion on what can be done to solve this problem. Before all of this however, we looked into data from the U.S census. My group, working with the Berry Good Food Foundation, looked into obesity rates. While comparing data and finding the summary statistics of our data, we were able to notice a lot. Food insecurity was brought to our attention, and what needs to be done to be able to fix this growing problem.
Check out our Data! Above, you can find all of our data deliverables for the semester. When comparing two data points, we decided to look at the amount of vegetables eaten by men and women. What we ended up finding was that women eat more vegetables in a day than men.
Throughout the project, my group's quality of work really improved. As the project got further into the semester, things started moving in terms of work. When tackling our deliverables, we were really able to work as a team in completing them. When working with the census data, as large as they were, we were able to get that done as well.
Reflecting back on the semester, I'm most proud of how our panel discussion went on exhibition night. Everyone, including parents, were able to have a really good and important conversation about food inequality. Our ultimate goal was to talk about how we can start eliminating food deserts in our community. With collaboration during this project, my group members and I really worked well together. Everyone was able to work evenly on the project which is always a good thing. As a whole, this project has really shown a new light on the problem of food insecurity. After doing this project, I feel as though I can do my part successfully in trying to limit this problem even on my own. Some things I want to start in my everyday life are gardening my own food, shopping locally, and eat as sustainably as I can.
If I could go back, I think I would look at more data in the project. For example, when we chose to look at the amount of vegetables males and females are consuming, I would now compare that to something like fruits. That way I could have data to compare with my other data.
