During this project, we will explore the seminal point in our nation’s history—the Revolutionary War. But we will literally hover through it by creating hovercraft floats to ride in a historical parade! Through reading and student’s individual research, we will seek to give voice to many of the people present at the time of the war that typically aren’t represented in history. We will be learning how to use artifacts to tell a story about a person’s life. To bring it altogether in a parade, we will investigate air pressure, density and buoyancy to build hovercrafts to use as historical floats.
For my figure, I chose a 1700's child. Children back then rich or poor didn't have that great of education. First I'll talk about the poor children; their education was very bad. They did not attend school, but sometimes their mothers would teach them how to read and write. They couldn't attend school because they had to work during the day. The boys would usually work in fields/forests and the girls would stay home with their mothers. They would learn how to cook, clean, and how to wash clothes (help with home chores). They usually ate cabbage soup, different stews with vegetables in them, vegetables, beans/meat, and fruits. The toys they played with were simple and made from wood. The rich children had better eduaction; the boys would to go school and sometimes college. The girls would sometimes have private teachers come and teach them as well. The food they ate were meats, breads, vegetables, and fruits. They would entertain themselves by playing with their toys like some sort of ball, paddles, and dolls. Most people studied the Catholic religion back then as well.
Reflection on Research:
Finding all of my research went well. We had to find research for our character. We had to find answers to the questions on our characters, some questions were "What was their opinion on the War?" or "What did your character eat during the 18th century?". First we had to work with 6th graders. We had to teach them how to find credible sources to find their information. It went good working with them. We got to show them how to find good sources for their research, as well as find some research for ourselves. I really liked being able to help them because now they will be able to find their own sources that will give them correct information. One of the most difficult parts of find research was two questions. The questions asked us what type of trash would be around their cities, and what religion they studied. This was the hardest because at first I couldn't find anything on both of those topics. Then I just had to keep researching and I eventually found the question to those answers. We also had to do critiques on our questions. That was when we presented our questions to our group and they told us if we needed to add anything or change it. I really benefited from these because they gave me feedback on what I could do better. If it wasn't for critiques, my work wouldn't have been a finished product. For our groups, three other people were working with me on this. I really liked working as a group because it made things a lot easier. We all worked well together, and shared ideas to come up with a really awesome float.
Reflection on Speech:
For our speech, we had to sound like our character. I had a child, and had to imitate what I thought he/she would sound like. I did a Poor Boy from the 18th century. What I did to mimic his voice was almost put myself in his shoes. I thought about what he would sound like, and what type of words he would use. Since he was uneducated, I had to misspell words and use the wrong grammar. One of the most difficult parts of this speech was really getting it right. It took a few tries to get the grammar and voice right. We have been practicing VOICE this past few weeks, and I think that it really helped out for this part of the project. Something that I'm most proud about is the overall view of it. I'm very happy with how it sounds altogether, and how it looks. It looks like a young uneducated person has written it.
